Holding Together in GL11

Growing the seeds of compassionate action, coming together as broad community, exploring the benefits of becoming trauma informed

Holding Together is a grass-roots project aimed at building Dursley and Cam as a trauma informed community.

It does this by SHARING, SUPPORTING and INSPIRING trauma-informed compassionate action throughout the community.

Trauma changes the way we think, feel & behave until we recover

There is growing recognition that trauma is both an outcome and cause of many social challenges including domestic abuse, child abuse, substance misuse, violence, social isolation and so on. Trauma can cause and exacerbate mental illness and physical illness. Trauma generates shame and blame.

Psychological trauma can be understood as acquired brain injury resulting from overwhelming toxic stress.

Stressors that lead to trauma can include interpersonal violence, social violence, natural disasters (including pandemics!), abuse, neglect, chronic social stressors (poverty, debt, unemployment, isolation), chronic work-based stress, intergenerational trauma and so on. When we are traumatised, we are either in a ‘flipped lid’ state or more vulnerable to ‘flipping our lid’ as described by Professor Dan Siegel.

Recovery from trauma is always possible and usually spontaneous

when we have access to and are safely held within a network of resilient relationships. Such relationships are characterised by compassion and reason. But right now, because of pandemic, because of climate change, because of the complexity and demands of 21st century life, because of increased stress and adversity right across the community, resilience is at a low ebb.

Understanding trauma promotes recovery & builds resilience
